UCDavis UI/UX course final project : EasyEats
Date Completed: July 2022
Course:
Principles and practices of User Interface (UI) and User Experience (UX). Design for digital, interactive media. Iterative design processes, audience research.
Assignment:
Students were tasked to create an idea for an app that they would then bring to life. Guided to identify their problem, narrow in on their demographic, conduct research to provide reasoning for their solution, and begin using Figma to create Low-Fi, Mid-Fi, and final Hi-Fi ideations to be presented at the end of the course.
My Idea & The Problem:
As a college student finding time to cook, let alone be creative in the kitchen, was a struggle. I found myself every Sunday being overly ambitious in what I’d buy at the grocery store. Only to be standing at my fridge doorway mid-week, hungry and tired, looking at various veggies, random sauces, and mismatched leftovers. I often resorted to cooking what I knew or eating out a lot more than I would have liked resulting in wasting that food I couldn’t figure out what to do with or eat fast enough. It was this that made me inspired to create an app that would combat food waste and inspire creativity in the kitchen that would be carried into their lives long after college.
Solution:
Create an app that inspires college kids to cook more with ingredients they already have.
Features to Consider
Allow for quick input and output
Remain cost-effective
Consider including a social element/ interaction with others
Final Product:
I created an app that allowed the user to input various ingredients they had that they needed to use. With these ingredients, the app then generated various recipes that used each ingredient. In my prototype, these are chicken and rice. Once given the receipt the app provides the opportunity for the user to share their creation with friends on the EasyEats app or onto other existing platforms like Instagram and Facebook.
Final Prototype: Designed for iPhone 13, click the image to be taken to Invision for Prototype!
2024 Review & Wishes for Easy Eats Revamp:
I look back on this project endearingly. Before this class in 2022, I had no prior knowledge of UI/UX or experience with Figma and Invision so was very impressed with my product. Now, looking at two years later, there are a lot of things that I’d love to redo.
Conducting User Research: Is manually inputting ingredients the best way for our demographic?
I’d consider if college students would take the time to type out each ingredient. I don’t think so anymore.
I’d narrow in on my target audience and use that to develop the app more.
I wonder if taking a picture would work and if AI could be used as a tool to take inventory without the need for typing anything.
I’d survey students, conduct interviews, and do A/B testing between both options seeing which input option generates the most usage.
Revamp Design Choices
I would reconsider my color choices for the app. Doing research into what colors are associated with food and invoking hunger. However, I’d keep in mind that I initially chose green due to its association with freshness and sustainability.
I’d create a new logo, FOR SURE! It makes me giggle looking at the apple as I’m not sure how it relates to my app and I wouldn’t have made that choice today - so am excited to revamp it with my current skill set.
I’d redo all the illustrations using my own and curating them to the app more. I’d also work with layout integrating them where they contribute to the frame versus being pasted in the same spot across all frames.
I’d implement what I now know as standard UI requirements into my design. Changing the sizing for buttons, logo and font sizes, font choice, search bar actions, and drop-down menus.
Wireframings: Illustrations of initial ideas. Drawings show elements I was considering when creating the app. Initially, I thought the application may help generate a shopping list as an alternative option to working with what someone may already have. However, I decided I wanted to choose one element to start with. Perhaps I’ll explore that second on in the future :)
